1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
1 Attachment(s)
Just a build for the hell of it. One of the groups on FB had a Monogram thing going so decided to get in on the act...like one does.
So then, two pages of this on my site for the multitude of gory details. Linky thing below. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/wipshuttle.html The shorthand, or as short as possible version of the story so far... This was originally slated to go with the full stack build which kinda faded away but i'll get back to it at a much later date. Onward anyways! The kit. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/MVC-245S.JPG http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/MVC-246S.JPG The stuff in the payload bay is bound for the spares bins, paylaod bay itself will be used for strength. Resin main and OMS engines. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/MVC-247S.JPG Shapeways figures. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8638.jpg Decals!...and lots of 'em! http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...d%20decals.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8617.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8620.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8626.jpg First up, some gluing together... http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...tle/fuzfun.jpg Then knock some holes in it for the nose RCS thruster clusters. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8566.jpg Some push moulded cones. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8575.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8578.jpg Shoved in and glued up a treat. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8579.jpg Repeat more than a few times and trimmed up. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8588.jpg Sand and primer look see. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8609.jpg Cockpit do up with some sheet styrene. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8909.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8911.jpg Paint plastered and som DIY waterslide decal do up. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8914.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8917.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8918.jpg Detailing done, seats and crew figures in position. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8924.jpg Cockpit lighting going in. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8931.jpg Cockpit in and a look see. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8937.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8964.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8955.jpg Stand pole attached. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9004.jpg Union flag decal where it should be. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8998.jpg Window framing! Clear parts glued on. Multiple layers of masking tape laid down in one strip, sliced up in to the almost correct shapes and applied to the cockpit windows. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9000.jpg Quick cure epoxy putty jammed in to the gaps, sanded and then a edge trim in places with wet tooled Aves to sharpen it up a bit. All tape removed. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9001.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9002.jpg That's the build so far, all the Warbird tile decal sheets got scanned redrawn by me to make 'em a bit different. All printed out on to white backed decal paper via my laser printer. Mine to the left, theirs to the right. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8968.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8969.jpg Theirs to the top, mine to the bottom. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8970.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag8978.jpg And that's it for now. Go easy out there now gang! :icon_thumright: |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
I like everything about this project.
Especially the re-drawn decals. Please post more updates! -SF |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Thanks SF!
Well if you insist. Got somthing done this day... In primer. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9024.jpg Leading edges done. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9040.jpg Test look see with some paper print of the decals. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9042.jpg Masking and built up coats of Tamiya primer white for some panelling because why not. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9049.jpg All the paintwork that's needed is done. The decals suggest painting the whole tail black before applying decals so done and we'll see how it all turns out. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9047.jpg The windows just got a bit of black edging, decals will do the rest. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9055.jpg And the back got done. Decals will cover the beaver tail so no paint needed. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9053.jpg More to come! :icon_thumright: |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
I like the RCC results. All those decal sheets, and they didn’t have those?
Great results on the RCS thrusters and star tracker ports. Definitely tuning into this for the long haul on this project. -SF |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Thanks SF. No they did not have the RCC, the decal set is a tad deficient in a few places but nothing that can't be dealt with by fair means or foul...foul if that's what it takes guffaw
Well made a bit of a start, got the tail main decals on but not without a hiccup or two. Turns out the main ones are too tall and the deep grooves on the rudder rotation are just too much for the decals to handle no matter how much Microsol get's thrown at 'em. So a bit of a rework and reprint got what i needed. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...de by side.jpg So got busy after ripping the first lot off and the result... http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9062.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9064.jpg Additional stuff to do but it's a start! :D More later. |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
The decaling continues...
The tail end with the Warbird redrawn and Warbird supplemental decals. Those are supposed to be used on the Revell one but what the hell. Partly decaled up back end. Used some extras I printed to do the back plate of the OMS pods and the side RCS bits. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9081.jpg That bit in progress, on to the rest outside of the tail. Now seeing how the decals fit or not fit as it happens, decided to bin any attempt at accuracy so going for what looks nice. 40 or so decals later... http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9084.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9086.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9088.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9096.jpg That sorted as much as needs be, on to the wings. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9103.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9124.jpg Now did a vote on the FB RI page as to what to name her and the winner was 'Daedalus' Of 'Space Cowboys' fame. Do a close enough is good enough on how the wing markings look. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...h12m58s957.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9132.jpg http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9101.jpg And plastered the belly decals on...that was fun. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/web...e/Imag9120.jpg That's the lot for now! :D |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
There was a vote?
Dang, I missed it. I would’ve voted for “Collaroy”... (Who remembers that shuttle...?) |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Someone did vote for the Collaroy SF, I just looked over the post. Can't find the message of the person that did but I put it on the list. Daedalus was the clear winner though.

Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Look! A tiny Clint Eastwood in a pumpkin suit!
Also, gorgeous engines — what was the paint regimen? |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Thanks SF!
Paint on the engines as follows: Self etching grey primer. Dark dirt water based wash airbrushed inside and out, excess on the outside removed with a slightly damp cloth and moistened q-tip. Insides done with a moistened q-tip working in a continuous shallow spiral from the top of the inner cone to just short of the outer rim. Left some of the splatter from the wash inside the back end of the main engine bells as is because why not. Inside streaking done with with ground pastel chalk, black and dark grey, brush applied. Airbrushed a light coat of Alclad II light burnt metal over the outer surfaces with a slightly heavier coat at the open end. Silver drybrush over all the raised lines. Piping picked out in white gold but not over the raised bands on the piping. Airbrushed a light coat of Alclad light sheen varnish then a light coat of matt varnish. Fun and done :D Oh and finished thread here: http://www.resinilluminati.com/showthread.php?t=17365 |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Fantastic results. Every space shuttle main engine I have ever painted has used the following vigorous regimen:
-black paint ... and that’s it. Always appreciate tips from the masters on how it’s done. -SF |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
Thanks SF! Well to be honest mate, if you're happy with just black then it's all good trust me.
I appreciate tips from the masters meself. If you ever come across any, be a pal and pass them on will ya? :D |
Re: 1/72nd Monogram Space Shuttle
This one is a beauty, the Monogram group build session was both fun and inspiring!
