Delta DC-8-71 1/144 scale.
The Minicraft DC-8 series is the most wonderfully engineered Airliner kits I've built so far. I'm working on 3 variants at the same time, but I've moved my concentration to the Delta -71. I do have the Zvezda Boeing 747-8i, and the Boeing 787 in the stash, but I haven't started on them yet. Nothing but high praise for both those kits, and I look forward to building them.

I ruined the vertical stab trying to take the bend out of it with too much heat. I cut it off, and cast a new tail of one of the other kits.

Tail removed

Hole patched, filled, and sanded.

Molding a new tail off another kit.

Casting came out OK with just a few bubbles.

New tail installed.

The other 2 variants of the DC-8 WIP. The short version is the NASA Flying Laboratory.

The NASA version had to be modified in Fuselage length.

Back to the Delta -71.
Engine parts being given their metal finishes where needed.

The fuselage, filled sanded and polished after primer coats starts to get its metal finish. Here the gray coragard panels were painted in first. Next, a 'Neutral' Aluminum base color is applied, followed up with Polished Aluminum sprayed to the leading edges on the wings, and the horizontal and vertical stabilizers.

To recreate the look of a natural Aluminum finish, several shades were applied to pull off the effect.

Top Aft

Next, is to tape off the bare metal finish to apply the Gloss White finish to the upper fuselage.

More to come!

Nice work, good finish on the paint thus far-

Real happy with how the paint is coming so far. Here the Gloss White is down and the maskings have been removed. I'll give the Gloss White at least 24hrs before I wet sand it with 8000, then 12,000 grit polishing cloths to ensure there is no orange peel and raised paint from masking is removed.

That looks great, Tracy.

Re: Delta DC-8-71 1/144 scale.
Some of the decals are being separated from the main sheet so they can be sprayed a dullcoat finish. They are trimmed right to the edge of the graphics to prevent silvering. This retains the luster of the metal finish, and renders the flat characteristics of the surrounding panel detail provided with the Delta versions livery.
Getting sprayed.
more coming!

Re: Delta DC-8-71 1/144 scale.
CFM engines are complete... save the lil' Delta widget on the cowls.
Dullcoated decals in place on the pylons...
...and in the intakes
Getting ready to start slashing into the decal sheet once I confirm no finish issues with the dull coated decals.

Flash does NOT to the F1 fan's finish justice. ;-)

Re: Delta DC-8-71 1/144 scale.
The engines are now all done! Widgets are on.
I figured the Tail Widget was going to be a pain in the arse due to the contours of the rudder. As the decal settled, the sharper details began shredding it as it pulled down into the recesses.
Testors Red with gradual additions of White to match the spare decal from a second kit. The Blue required a significant amount of Black to get it to the right shade. Here are the test dots next to the graphic.
Real happy with the results! I plan to shoot a light coat of very thin semi-gloss to unify the finish.

Wow! Paint matching a decal is very hard to do. Kudos to your mad skills!

Re: Delta DC-8-71 1/144 scale.
Getting down to the finer details on the wings.
The decal provides a convenient way out for decaling all the fuel ports and tank access doors in one swoop. You can see the carrier film here.
I've elected to forgo the battle with carrier film "silvering" for such a spread-out decal. I found a red strip sheet in my decal library and used a punch-n-die set to make the fuel caps individually.
All the markings in place... Artist oils used to highlight the wing panel access doors.

A change of pace for the venue (here), but no drop in quality. Well done!
