Default 1/537 Scale Wasp Interceptor

This is a 1/537 redesign and scratch build of the Hornet Class. This is also the sister ship to Dave Lewis's Hornet build. This started on paper to modify and streamline the 1980's design into a practical motion picture era starship. Keeping the same general layout and dimensions of the original (as Dave had already started his based on the original plans), a bow and aft view were drawn to help visualize the geometry.

An original smoothie hull was molded and cast to begin the process of construction as well as a square brass tube armature cut and soldered to support the model internally.

The lower primary half is fabricated from sheet styrene with a PNT resin lower sensor mounted navigation deflector as well as a recast nav dome from the Reliant kit.

The 'stinger' section will be sculpted out of styrene and balsa foam in two halves and then cast in resin for both the Hornet and Wasp builds.

More scratch work on the styrene lower primary continues with plenty of details planned for the weekend checklist. The upper half was recast again in Smooth-On white plastic as I was not happy with the initial one.

More weekend update pics. The lower primary received a pair of recessed areas simply because I had the option/room to do it. I'll figure out what they're for later. The upper half was recast in Smooth-On White, cut, channeled and pimped out to mate with it's lower half. The armature was glued in and both halves sealed.

The port half of the 'stinger' hull was roughed out in balsa-foam in preparation for finalizing that master for molding. I think it needs more work yet, still feels 'fat'.

A bad influence? You say that like it's a bad thing. You know, I shouldn't be used as a barometer for anything. But, you don't have to put anything away. I say leave it all out. An open mind may snare inspiration from some of the most unexpected places. Even Star Trek.

More carving to slim the stinger has become a challenge. The tapered cross-section is dictated by the transition of the width of the bridge deck to the width of the impulse deck aft.

Moving vertically, tapering that given girth is hampered by the need to keep a mostly perpendicular side to allow for several fighter docking ports. In an attempt to shed some pounds for a "wasp-waist", I've introduced some pronounced recesses to step the front and rear edges. I'm not sure I like this. Doesn't feel right, especially up front. Additionally, the impulse area is now too narrow. I may have to take even more drastic measures to smooth all of this out.

Make the aft edge good and thin, from below the impulse deck down to the pod. I kind of had 1/4" in mind.

For the impulse deck itself, from fore to aft, think about making that deck taper almost as much as the decks below it, but then start to flare out to full width as it reaches the warp pylon join areas. Similar to the way it's depicted on the original blueprints, but more pronounced.

Think about the stern of a sailing ship, the graceful but abrupt curve that happens as the hull transitions from the wide gallery on the transom down to the rudder.

Here is the port side half recarved. A lot of material was removed. The fore to aft curve was added along the top portion and the trailing edge thinned. The impulse area was reshaped as well.

Keeping in mind this initial stinger half is only the portion below the pylon deck, there will be an additional carved 'wing' piece blending the stinger to the pylon mounts as well as to the bridge module. This will fit above the stinger itself and include the impulse crystal as seen in the top view.

Some GT40 inspiration has me thinking about incising a vent along the stinger hull prior to the impulse bulge.

Continuing on…

Weekend update: Installed aft primary hanger doors port and starboard. Finalized stinger sculpt design and repeated it on the starboard half. Several coats of water based poly and primer to start the smoothing/hardening process prior to molding.
