Default Accurate Models F-1 engine

I'm going be building this kit (in between all the others, lol) so I thought I'd start with an "out of the box' preview of this huge kit.

Firstly, the F-1 engine was the largest Kerosene/Liquid Oxygen rocket engine of it's day, producing 1.5 million pounds of thrust. The Saturn V utilized five of these monsters on the S-IC or first stage. Although the F-1 had a rocky start at the hands of the military in the late 1950's, the engine matured into a very reliable powerplant.

This is a fairly complex kit, including resin, styrene and white metal parts with decals and several cut acylic parts for details. The molding engineering is amazing as there are virtually no casting flaws on anything. I believe this to be the result of superb casting techniques along with Jim refusing to send out any subpar parts.

The kit is a 1/20th scale replica of the prototype, seen here next to a 1/144th version from Airfix:

White metal parts are used for much of the small diameter plumbing as well as the bracing used on the engine and stand.

The main parts of the engine are the nozzle, nozzle extension, turbopump exhaust (the ring) and the turbopump body. In this second run of the kit, the nozzle extension has been inproved and the fit of some parts relocated to be even more accurate.

The kit comes with instructions on CD as well as a CD of photos provided by the most famous space geeks available, me included! Haha! Great reference material for sure.

I hope to start this monster soon and of course will be super detailing it 'cause a kit such as this demands it.

One thing I plan to do is to create the Foil-batt insulation blankets which these engines wore when flown. This will hide some of the glorious detail of the kit but I have a plan....

If you are interested in this kit, you should act fast. This is a very limited run kit. Accurate Models has a post in the Kits thread if you want to get on the list.

Instructions on one, reference photos on the other. I contributed a folder full of photos of an unflown production engine that is on display at the Huntsville U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
