I was hoping to see some brass start to show up... the build has begun!

Nice update Admiral!

I like the changes to the primary hull profile (it seems) the windows on the perimeter make it look different. Cool treatment on the upper eng hull. Shuttle bays look awesome

Thanks for following the build!

This week marked the beginnings of the physical model with the soldering of the brass armature. Early pics here:

Excellent. Btw, and I have been meaning to ask, but, how exactly do the rear shuttle bay doors operate?

There's been a bit of discussion about that on FB. Lots of ideas. I seem to have a bad habit of designing impossible hangar doors. Luckily, I don't have to have them functioning. But, I do see a few options. One I'm leaning towards is a segmented horizontal system of curved panels that rise out of the lower deck edge, that cantilever one over the other as it moves upward to a closed position. This would also be done as a pair, port and starboard.

The armature alone is impressive - and then you're going to wrap it in a starship!!

As for the doors, a simple explanation is...

Glad I checked in to see what this one was about - what an awesome design! I love that twin neck look - so much better than a single one.

I personally prefer the split hangar entrance if only because it looks so cool.
As for your hangar bay doors, why can't they be telescoping - ie, fold into or behind each other? I don't really know - I'm no designer, and everything I ever do is because I think it looks cool. No other reason really. In my world, function follows form I'm sure you will have the answer for it.
Shame you don't kit this - I'd buy one.

Thanks for looking Mr. Hatter!

I'm also all about function follows form so how it works is not as important when designing things three centuries from now. I'll let that generation of engineers figure it out.

Unfortunately, I'm just not a kit manufacturer. Again, with function following form, I'm more interested in creating the next new design rather than engineering, casting, mold making and mass producing a kit for everyone else. I'll leave that to those better equipped to do so.

Just wanted to say you shuttle "commercial" was great. Hope you plan a similar "publicity" even for this and future craft.

More armature work and the beginnings of the secondary hull, cut from .060 styrene. Hull forms are traced from section planes printed out from the digital model.

Soooo happy to see another armature get soldered and sheathed in styrene.

Any additional considerations because this beastie will be so much larger (heavier) than previous projects?

Nothing out of the ordinary so far. 40 feet of brass did the trick. But - there are some unknown as far as what process and materials will be used to construct the larger hull forms in the primary and nacelle components. I sure hope 3D printing is the answer.

After anxiously awaiting the design team to finalize the final dotted I and crossed T, the shipyard is now back in business!
