Default Bronco Models 1/35 Type XXIII U-boat

Hi guys.

Bronco's 1/35 Type XXIII Coastal U-boat measures in at 38 1/2 inches.

The plastic is fairly thick, with lots of molded in internal bracing.
Flood vents/limber holes are beveled to appear at scaled thickness.

The box it arrives in is deceptively small. The hull is divided into front
and back halves, with the join seam cleverly hidden by a weld line.

Weld lines on the hull and conning tower appear to be a bit over-stated,
but (personally) I'm not going to replace every single weld seam just for
the sake of hyper accuracy.

Addressing a few accuracy problems.......

First of all,the boat's screw is far too thick,as are the blades.

The actual prop hub is quite a bit more slender and pointier than
the one in the kit.

The kit's schnorkel is rudimentary at best.

Lacking in detail,it also appears to be the wrong shape.

But...different Type XXIIIs appeared to use different equipment
during their development.

The kit's schnorkel bears little resemblance to the late war schnorkel
utilized by most U-boats of the period.

Another thing....

Either the schnorkel is too long and wide,or the housing is too short
and narrow.

The kit's large flood vents/limber holes allow you to easily peer inside
the hull.

I might suggest a basic internal frame work.Nothing fancy...just something to add some detail.

Bronco came up with the bright idea to use magnets to hold open the
hinged bow caps (torpedo doors) with magnets,so you could display the kit's exceptionally well done torpedoes.

The problem is.....

The magnets are too damned strong!!! They'll hold the bow caps open, but you'll tear them off their hinges trying to close them again.

Bronco also supplies a nice fret of photo-etched detail parts, decals for two boats ( U-2336,and U-2329),and a length of thread.

In my opinion,Bronco turned out a pretty good large scale sub.

It was a lot cheaper than I expected, and is a fairly easy build.

The down side,is just a few relatively minor detail flaws that I'm
certain will be fixed by after-market detail sets.

All in all....I'd say it's worth the time, cash, and effort you're willing
to invest in it.

Unless you want me to get really anal about it.....

The Balkon Gerat (active sonar) device on the bow has 3 raised stubs that
need to be gotten rid of,and replaced with flat, disk shaped panels.

There's a photo of the Balkon Gerat on a boat that's being hauled up by a crane.....

The periscope is entirely too thick.

Here,my trusty 1/35 friend "Heinrich" is beside the kit periscope, and you'll see the much thinner actual periscope in the photo of the conning tower.

Be prepared to do a lot of drilling, filing, and filling if you want to model
a specific boat.

Many of them had different flood vent arrangements. Some symmetrical, and some were asymmetrical. The flood vents in this
kit are symmetrical.

Some boats had more of them...some had less.

A much more accurate prop, schnorkel, and periscope would suit me just fine.

Myself.....I've never been a "rivet counter". But for those of you who want to take this kit as far as possible into the realm of hyper-detail,I recommend this book.....

U-boater, glad to see this review, since i won't be getting to mine for probably another year, if not two. like i said in the other thread, this is #3 AFTER the delta, type II, and skipjack. I saw rumblings about the prop, and symmetrical flood holes, but the rest is new to me. I was of the opinion i would be replacing the periscopes with brass ones to reduce breakage, as well as a brass prop, but the news about the snorkel is disappointing.

i too am not a rivet counter, and to be honest, i doubt if any brass prop available will be any more accurate, and when this thing is in the water 50 feet out, i won't be able to see these errors anyway...

but still, they had the references to do it right...

In my opinion....

I think this kit is an attempt to appeal to both the R/C,and static
modelling communities. I get the feeling that there's going to be a flood
of after-market detail sets,corrections,conversions,etc....in the coming
months.

Tsenecal : I'd be willing to bet, that there will be an accurate brass replacement prop.It may be a bit pricey, but it will be spot on accurate. You know how things work in "our world". I wouldn't be
surprised if we start seeing correction/detail sets by June.

I did find a schematic with the type of schnorkel provided in the kit.
Even then,be prepared to do some surgery on the kit part.
