Here ya go:

Specifically, check out the Online Flyer for specifical information. This years theme is Aliens Invade Louisville! It's also the 20th Anniversary of WonderFest. Should be an interesting year.

A lot of us have started arriving on Thursday at some point so that we can get a - mostly! - good nights sleep before the weekend kicks off. If feasible, I highly recommend it as I had more energy thru-out the weekend when I started coming on Thursday afternoon as opposed to Friday afternoon. Should help w/the Jet Lag and the like.

Be aware that there are a number of unofficial events that transpire at WonderFest, as well, but which are still a part of WonderFest tradition. You've got two "university" events which both take place on Friday: SciFi University, traditionally sponsored by CultTVman.com and Federation Models - which is geared at teaching various modeling skills, taught by some of the best modelers out there for hardware and figures. There's WonderFest University - of which I know almost nothing, unfortunately.

Some unofficial events of which I'm aware: Unofficial Ugly Shirt Friday Un-Event, hosted by yours truely. I make a point of being at the Hotel Lounge (Crowne Plaza hotel, just to be clear) at 4pm-ish and start buying drinks for any ladies who show up, as well as for any folks who show up and introduce yourself while wearing an Ugly Shirt (traditionally defined as a shirt w/a Hawaiian Print pattern, but if it's in the spirit of a Hawaiian Print shirt and has... say... dice or spaceships or semi-nude wimmen-folk on it, it's all good). I put out the offer my first WonderFest in 2004 and even when I couldn't make it in 2006 sent money to Neb and he and his fantastic wife Marci held the event in my absence.

This Un-Event runs until 7pm, which is when the Lizard Lounge usually starts. The Lizard Lounge is hosted by Tracy of Federation Models. Tracy usually pays for a keg of beer which is free to all attendees for as long as it lasts. There's also usually a band or some sort of music being played, as well as FedMods has lots of goodies for sale before WonderFest - some of those goodies are premiering at WF and there are even some at slightly reduced prices.

CultTVman usually hosts movie watching in his suite, as well as has his own table in the Dealers Room. Folks generally come and go all weekend long, tho I can't speak for that with absolute certainty for daytime hours.

There's sometimes a movie viewing at a downtown Louisville theater. The movie is usually a classic SciFi flick, viewed on the big screen and when possible there is sometimes a guest of honor - an actor/ess who starred in the movie. I've never actually attended this, so can't comment beyond the above. I believe that CultTVman has been the sponsor for some years now and a fella named Dr. Gangrene is the host.

Traditionally speaking, Sunday night after the Banquet - or the SM groups Anti-Banquet - is an evening of winding down and reflecting the weekends events. Usually with adult libation. When I hosted the BLAP!Fest and Unofficial Starship Modeler Suite in '07, we were open all day and in the evenings 'til the last guest left, everyone gathered in our suite Sunday night 'til about midnight. For the folks at SM - many of which post here, you'll remember - in the past it's been in one of those folks' suite and has usually been packed from the time those folks get back from the Anti-Banquet 'til prolly 11pm-ish when folks go back to their rooms to get some rest before the drive/flight back Monday morning.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head at this time for unofficial/semi-official events for WonderFest. Whatever you do, don't be afraid to approach someone and introduce yourself. Try and keep an eye on people's name tags, as well. My advice is to print both your Username and your real name on your name tag - even if it's just your first name. It helps folks to know/remember who you are when you first meet up.

Thank you, Dave! That wasn't what I was thinking, but it's a nice addition to the above! I was thinking I'd already written out what I had above, but eventually found a much shorter version in an email to someone. It's only about two or three paragraphs and not nearly as in-depth. Helps add emphasis to the post above it, doncha think?

Thanks, tho, regardless!

It's the weekend of 15 & 16 May. It's not updated on their website yet, but keep an eye on the Official WonderFest USA website for updates.

BTW, the hotel is literally less than five minutes from the airport. You can call the hotel for their shuttle service, as well - they'll pick you up any time of the day or night.

Default Re: Regarding Wonderfest 2010

I've come up with an equation that should help you determine how much $$$ to take to spend on goodies at WF. (This applies ONLY to the loot in the dealers' rooms....NOT lodging, food, or anything else.)

The Cat's Goodie Theorem is:

Let's say there's an item over on SSM or FED MOD or Cult that you'd like to have but for whatever reason you haven't ordered it. Maybe you don't wanna pay $8 shipping on an $11 item. Maybe you don't wanna load up your credit card. Whatevah.

And let's say this item is such that if you saw it on a table right in front of you for $11, no sales tax, no shipping $$$, you'd buy it in a heartbeat.

What you need to do is go to all the stores on the WF Dealer List and come up with a list of your own. Keep it REALISTIC.

(For me, I made up a list of stuff I needed for various ongoing/stalled ship models, an engine set for one, a new deflector dish for another, a couple decal sheets, some Aztek Dummy masks for the other. You get my drift - stuff I needed and wanted and would happily buy.)

Take your list, add up the costs, and TRIPLE IT.

That should be considered the minimum amout of cash fundage you want to take. More if you can handle it.*

I didn't plan that ratio, but it's what I ended up with and it worked well. I had $$$ in my pocket when I came home too.

You *want* to pay cash for several reasons. 1) You know exactly how much you have available at all times. 2) Sunday afternoon/evening, HAGGLING! It worked for me! 3) If you use too much plastic the interest can eat your ass up. Also there are SAS* risks with credit cards.

* SAS = Spousal Accounting Security. Maintain this at all costs. She may not need to be aware of exactly how much $$$ you're totin'. Also, you don't want to hear, "YOU SPENT $455.99 at Griffton's House of Resin???

That's the way I do it, and I don't do it to disrespect Mrs. Cat** in any way. I've been known to do lots of wheeling and dealing at gun shows. At times, if I'm after a really BIG prize, I'll be selling off stuff months in advance so I'll have the coin to get what I need. She's fine with that and she accepts it. However, she's a main Accountant at her firm, and haggling makes her nervous and so do transfers of decent-size amounts of money. That's also why she never goes with me.

**Anyone who disses Mrs, Cat gets my full and undivided attention....particularly after this past weekend!

Hey Cat,
Thanks.

Thats not too bad of a plan their.
I agree with you on the cash part. The only thing I plan on using a card for would be the room. At least at the moment anyway???

As for the tripling of the expected expenditure....a few friends of mine have suggested the same thing, and......yup, I'm trying to come up with a workable budget that will get that descent "slush fund".

I will defiantly start working on my list of goodies.

Rooming is highly recommended.

Not only do you save $$$ which would be better spent in the dealers' rooms, but it gives you a chance to get to know fellow RI'ers better.

I get the bulk of my funds from the Tax Returns, myself. However, I also try to save up thru out the year, as much as possible. Generally speaking, I like to try and put those funds in my PayPal account and hold on to them as long as I can. Then, at least 50% of my WF funds come from my returns, tho it's usually more like 75%. That way, tho, I'm not taking all of the money from our return, funds we like to have for luxury purchases and/or vacation funds.

Screw THAT noise, brother! You need to be inside, with the gang, and the models, and maybe the six-foot Vampire chick!
