Now to show you how important the light and the proper exposure is I wanted to show you the same picture twice. The second with just 1 stop over exposure ... and just notice how different the same colors seem to appear of the Rancor's skin :

Then another example ... now with an exposure I liked :

... and with an added green filter in Photoshop :

... same paint just a totally different feeling of the Rancor's skin.

So you can understand that eventhough I have several screencaps saved in my Rancor file ... each one has a color influenced by the used exposure and with or without adding of colorgrading or color filters either on set or in post-production ... hence the painting of this Rancor monster shall always be an approximation of what I feel I see in those reference pictures.

Working on the Rancor ... I have done some shading on the arms and shoulders to match evenly with those claws :

Then some more work inside the mouth and on the tongue :

And some light dental whitening and the start of a bit of shading :

So in all a good day painting this beasty ... some more pictures with the added improvements :

Rancor's legs . . . several layers, some shading added and I painted the feet and toe-nails . . . not quite done yet, but almost there :

And as I mentioned earlier I got my paints from the attic . . . thus some are quite old and dry but by adding a little water I can still use them ... and more importantly I can mix any shade of color I need with just a minimum of paints ... so for those of you interested in what I use to paint this beast, here's a picture :

I did a layer of dark wash on the feet and let it dry ... but then the toe-nails became to dark ... so I added a lighter yellowy layer of dry-brushing over it ... but when I woke up this morning I wasn't satisfied ... so I added some darker splotches here and there and this is the result :

To get an idea of all the upgrade paintwork done sofar ... here's another picture of the Rancor :

I started work on the Rancor's shield on his back . . . I had to paint over the blue splotches to cover them up entirely :

Whilest that paint had to dry, I did some touch ups here and there and then took several pictures to check those details again :

And a picture to give you an overview of my workplace :

Now that the Rancor is standing on his feet it's already a different view on the colors added and the way light falls over his skin.

Some pictures to check the result of his backshield :

Then I decided to give the spine, shoulders and his backshield a slight wash of dirty green :

You can barely see that dirty green wash in the pictures but trust me it's there. Then I noticed the spikes on his shoulder-shields were not high-lighted enough ... so I added a dirty yellow dry-brushing to each of the tips of them :

Then I took another close-up to see how much progress I made :

And another full frame :

I had a rare moment in my kitchen with the sunlight ... so I present to you the Rancor in movie technicolor :

I added a little bit more green to the shoulders and spine and the back of his head :

Weathered his shoulder spikes to be less prominent and did some touch ups on his tongue :

Well I managed to get the Rancor's manacle or wrist cuffs made. I used some random plastic pieces to scratch build the part, some faux leather and magic sculpt ... this is what it looks like before applying paint :

And of course I had to gather some metal rings, which will be attached when everything is done and the manacle can be put on the Rancor's arm :

I finished the weathered paintjob on those wrist cuffs and I attached them onto my Rancor's right arm :

Sofar I'm quite pleased with the endresult ... I never thought I had it in me

So I scratchbuild some saliva drips using a thin transparant piece of elastic rubber, from a Han Solo action figure and some Mod Podge glossy glue . . . here's a test-fitting :

After taking this picture I decided to use the Mod Podge around his gums and on his teeth, inside the mouth and on his tongue. It will give a shiny finish like saliva :

Indeed with the added slime and glossy saliva the Rancor comes more to life ... so I'm glad.
