Default Wheel help

I'm hoping some one here can help me.
I've got a large car model to do but the wheels/tyres on it are one piece resin castings and they are terrible. I'm going to try and scratch build some new ones.
The wheels themselves shouldn't be much of a problem as I can make them on a lathe, it's the tread on the tyres I'm stuck with. How is this done or whats the best way to try.
This is what I'm after.

Neo, this is JUST a suggestion...

Take some modeling clay and flatten it out nice and even about twice as long as the circumference of that tire tread. Roll the tire firmly through the clay and keep that roll nice and even too. Build some clay side walls and skin that tread pattern with some resin.

Once it cures, you'll have a flat straight strip of resin tread that you can sand flat and even. Then, heat the resin and wrap it around your new tire until you get it like you need it.

That may work?

Rob.

I've done this before by turning the tyre blank to the correct diameter but minus the thickness of the tread.
Next I machined from acrylic or styrene the tread pattern as individual strips. These were then wrapped and glued around the circumference of the tyre blank.
Once everything had dried I put the blank back in the lathe and blended everything together using wet & dry on a board.

Fortunately I didn't have to cut the tread pieces by hand as I have a small cnc router which saved a lot of time; however it can be done manually it just takes a bit of time!

If you wanted me to try cutting the tread pattern for you just let me know.

Phil

I just need the tread cutting into something I can wrap around a blank wheel (which I'll make later) then I can cast them to get the other two.
