Default YPRES 1914 * FINISHED*

Here is a fig/dio/vignette I started in 2010 I think. Got pretty far, dropped it , and just picked it up again , with our IPMS show's next years theme of "The Great War" I wanna get it done. My best info tells me that 'Ypres" is pronounced 'eep'.

So we will begin with a recap of supplies and work to date.
The main fig is from Jaguars "Close Call Tommy" 120 mm kit. I find that subject unworkable , considering the horrific circumstances of trench warfare. Most trench scenes of this type contain all the usual items , mine is no different. The fig is mildly changed , nothing too extreme. Also used is some of Firing Lines excellent WW 1 line of accessories.
Enough blather on with the pix:

Also used is some items from Verlinden , bones , skulls , heads , and German equipment from this kit:

A lot of work has been done on this , I will post a few more times to get this going.

I tried a different approach to the base , having seen what happens when spray paint is applied to styrofoam. The styro was glued to the medite base pre-cut by me, the shape coming to me in a semi-comatose state ,my best imagineering condition!
The base/styro matrix was sprayed and the melting began:

Cool effect ,but soft and rounded ,after reflection a more conventional path was used, I'll show that later.

After market for WW 1 will be going nuts in the next few years , with the 100 th anniversary at play. One thing that was really needed in the 120mm scale is the corrugated metal used for em battlements and trench construction. I found it in the smaller scales but had to come up with a way to fabricate it for the 120 mm scale used here. The pix should tell the tale:
A guard rail was used from this kit:

Secured to a mounting board:

Several pizza cutters were procured:

And modified into this tool:

Material selected:

Dry run:

Masking the material keeps the surface clean:

Research indicated there were several profiles of corrugation , mine looks sufficiently realistic:

With the corrugation situation solved I began to add the obligatory WW 1 details to the scene:
Duckboards and metal:

Figure fitting and gouging out the styro to add details:

The piece was put away at that time, I had a number of others to finish , which takes all my concentration on each piece. Picking it back up I realized the mud was too soft and unrealistic. I used 6-7 items from my supplies to make some more mud and I applied that to good effect yesterday:
Before:

After:

Much better.
I also pre-shaded the fig and equipment:

I also cant make up my mind which face looks the best , the black and white one is my top pick so far , but I will do all three ,mostly for fun/practise:

Next post will be about the uniform and equipment , I am waiting for paint colors. The front of the piece will have a length of metal and cut out letters in the following pattern:

Thank you . We will take this through to the contest in Oct 2014 . Prolly wont take that long but my ineptitude as a figure painter dictates an extended fabrication period.
Or does that sound too fucking duochey.

Minor league update here, getting busy in my new digs.
I skeletonized the hand shown here:

And cleared the muddy detail from this hat:

Both items from resin sets , carved by hand.
