Default Revell 1/144th Saturn V reissue important announcement

The Saturn V Builder's Society has activated the "Emergency NON-Accurate Kit Release System" for the following kit:

Revell 1/144th Saturn V reissue (formerly the Monogram kit)

This kit has been released with a set of decals which are more inaccurate than the original 1960's kit release.

The S-II lettering "UNITED STATES" is printed in black instead of red and is in a totally inaccurate font style.

Builders wishing to build this kit should refer to aftermarket decals for safer building and more accuracy.

Contact your local builder's society for suggestions on safer, more accurate decals.

This concludes this Emergency System Announcement.

I heard about that, and Revell is being a total dick about it. They refuse to replace 'em, saying that's just the way it is so suck it up

They didn't put it quite that way, but they may as well have

Rick Sternbach will be getting some business I guess www.spacemodelsystems.com/decals.html

It's a terrible way for them to behave. I guess they probably think "geesh, we reissued the things so you'd quite whining...and you want it accurate?"

I get all my Apollo type decals from Rick. Good people and good decals.

How is the plastic itself for accuracy? I've been tempted to get one recently, but have balked every time. Kit contents will be the make or break.

If you are considering get a kit, get the Airfix 1/144 re-release which is coming out now. Tme Revell (nee Monogram) kit suffers from an underscale spacecraft section at the top. You can get a replacement part from realspacemodels.com .

The Airfix kit now includes a properly scaled CSM and is generally better detailed than the Revell kit.

Having just bought the new retooled Airfix kit, I can say it's way better than the Revellogram version.

There's no doubt that with the new parts it is much better than the original release. The Airfix kit was always better in several ways than the Monogram version. I'd rather have the Monogram's S-II/S-IVB interstage and have used it instead of the Airfix part.

Where the controversy begins is with Studio Scale modelers who wanted the original parts (now left out) for their builds.

I might get one of the Airfix kits in the new year - I had one in the early 80s and loved it.

Seeing the comments about the "wedges" on the Airfix kit's stringer components meet brings back a fairly sharp memory of a significant deficiency. I wonder if it would be feasible to reinforce the inside of the joints, sand the wedge down and add the stringer detail with very fine thread like a fine fishing line? I wouldn't want to get into major scale alterations, but that and removing the raised panel lines seem pretty important to getting a reasonable result...

Small square styrene pieces from Evergreen or Plastruct could be used instead of string. I ignored the stringer detail on the last one I built and just focused on what could be added or changed to make it more accurate. A proper paint job with foil sections and good decals go a long way towards having an acceptable replica.

So the kit is still OK for studio scale to strip down for parts then?

For some parts, yes. They only changed the upper most part, which is some critical SS kit donor parts, but not ALL. And unlike how they originally said that it would be an added sprue bit, for some reason they blocked out the "old" parts (to save a penny on plastic I guess) and just included the new replacement bits.
