Default Re: OK, now I am confused with the new Trek...[SPOILERS]

Star trek as far as I can recall has always subscribes to the change something in the past ans screw up the future.....yesterdays Enterprise, Guardian, FC, etc.

In my opinion by saying the new film subscribes to quantum mechanics, they have a reason to say well this is not a reboot, or a re imagining, nor is this TOS, and nor do we screw with the TOS time line. This is an all new time line from a parallel universe.

Then they can always visit a true TOS time line in a future film since nothing in Nero's universe essentially screws with it.

well, not always. sometimes they fall back on the pre-destination paradox. i.e. the change was made because it was always supposed to be made.

Scotty and the Transparent Aluminum
Gary 7 and the exploding space platform
Trials and Tribble-ations and the tribble bomb.

and that whole deal with Capt. Braxton and the timeship on Voyager.

but I think you hit the nail on the head. this whole film plot seems (at least with the limited amount I know about it) to be a variant of Tomorrow is Yesterday. Instead of making sure Capt. Cristopher has a son to head the Jupiter space probe, Spock has to make sure
Kirk becomes a captain. Even if he becomes a different type of captain due to the different circumstances in his formative years which would shape who he became

Now I know why Janeway always said that Temporal mechanics gave her headaches.

For my money, It's the Temporal Plumbers you need to watch out for...

Aztec hit a few points that might be dead-on. MORE POTENTIAL SPOILERS.....

Here's a few things that might be plausibly involved (I think a lot of Orci's interview is intentional diversion with the quantum theory plot-points because they don't want to give away the real plot before the premiere, but hey it's just a movie).

Nero: Sounds like a very dis-affected Romulan who has seen the Empire fall apart in TOS timeline - and as a result his personal ambitions were thwarted. I would not be surprised if he was the mysterious figure speaking to the Sulibans from the future. (I have a theory that it was another Romulan, but that's for another day.) Preceding events, primarily ignited when the Enterprise stopped the incursion by the Bird of Prey in 'Balance of Terror', got things rolling; if he returns to a date prior to that, alter history sufficiently, then he becomes the Empire's savior or at least the 'go-to' guy who wields power behind the throne. Or if he really has begun a separate timeline, he's done this purely to become Praetor of a newly-invigorated Empire, with a devastated Federation no match for a Romulan Fleet wielding very advanced future technology.

Spock: There's enough evidence from TNG that he may be in some sort of alliance with Nero for purely altruistic reasons, mayhaps to jump-start 'reunification' in an earlier, less volatile time, and gets blindsided by Nero. Finding himself with Nero 'outside' the timeline, and seeing what Nero has wrought - much like Kirk and Spock witnessed the results of McCoy's trip to 1930s Earth - he also goes back to put everything on track. Again, it may not be quite the TOS timeline, but not the trainwreck that Nero is attempting to cause.

The Enterprise: I believe the Orci interview is verbal smoke to conceal the real inspiration of this script, the Guardian of Forever. (Let's leave out the bitching about which version of the script was best, this is about the core concept.) The Enterprise, literally the ship, is to this storyline what Edith Keeler was to the TOS "City" script: the focal point, around which the 'eddys in time' are drawn too - in the persons of Spock, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu. Whatever the movie-team intends, to me the JJprise represents the failure of the timeline, and is a great part of what Spock sees has gone so blatantly wrong. It's a grandoise, opulent, outrageous design that likely mirrors a Federation so arrogantly complacent that it would blithely hand Nero every opportunity to destroy Vulcan.

To paraphase: Save the Enterprise, Save the Federation.

"These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise....." TOS was ship-centric. It was about the Captain and crew of this ship.....and all of us who wanted to be aboard. (If you were twelve when you first saw the Enterprise, surrounded by a real world of war, riots, and hatred, there was a real symbol that somehow someday things were going to get better instead of worse.) I'm hoping Abrams and his writers got that from the beginning.

Not holding my breath, butcha never know.
