Default ES-11D Cat's Eye - in 1/72

This is the Cat's Eye from the anime Macross, the first series. It's a resin kit by Neptune Models that I bought on the Starship Modeler site.

First impressions is that it is a nice kit! There are some fit issues, but everything looks good and only requires a little bit of sanding to settle in. It's real nicely cast with just about no flash.

Here's the parts all laid out.

I decided to do this as an in-flight display, so it'll be gear up and mounted. And to mount it I needed to fill a big cavity in the belly.

A little aforementioned fir issue was the belly panel. It's slightly overlong, so it needed to be sanded back. The gear doors were also a little wonky. They're slightly off in shape which wouldn't matter any if they gear were deployed. You can there not so bad, and I put some dissolved putty along the seems to close them up.

Wing tips are also on, and again I'm using Mr. Dissolved Putty in the seems.

As for the engines, you get four fan discs, two for the inlets to the wing mounted reaction engines, and two for the exhausts on the atmospheric engines along the fuselage.

There's no discs for the inlets on the fuselage nacelles though, so you either have to use the FOD covers supplied or fudge your own detail.

After seeing how the discs look in the exhausts, I decided to go a different route...

I removed the fan discs and glued them up forward. The problem then being that there is no allowance made for fully round fans, so I had to cut them in half. Which works out good when looking down inside, as they are deep enough in and nearly flat against the fuselage.

To replace the exhaust, I hit the parts bins and found this!

They're from Gundam and I bought a bunch about a decade ago with the thought of using them for bash fodder. Forward thinking...

They required some cutting and rough sanding and some dremeling of the nacelle interior to get them to fit good in there, but they're looking nice now.

And since this is an in-flight, I needed a mount. That's why I filled in the cavity, to give me something to cut into. I had some acrylic rod left over and some brass tubing bought as a grab-bag of shapes and sizes, and it just so happens they snug together none too tightly.

I cut a length of the tubing and glued it into the belly panel and then used five-minute epoxy in the hole to further secure it.

Once dry, she sits up there quite nicely...

Still a lot to do, such as painting the new exhausts and gluing the nacelles on. Then it's time to get the reaction engines together. They come in two halves and look like they'll be a joy to glue together...

That's cool. I'm looking forward to buying another. Will there be any changes in it?

Thanks!

I have new consoles made up to depict its updated avionics and radar systems. The pilot's is from a 1/72 F-117 and the RIO's has a blank piece of styrene bisected down the middle to create two huge MFDs rather than the original round, tiny scope.

Starting to put the reaction engines together now.

Some more going on!

I decided to mount a sensor blister atop the tail, like what's seen on 'newer' Prowlers.
It started life as the foot of a Gundam.

It's still being shaped.

And with the reaction engines test fitted along with the wings.

Still amuch to ado!

I'm glad I have so many!!

Nother little update.
The engines clearly aren't handed, so left can go for right and vice-versa. But that means that all three holes per side are not needed. The one visible one on the inside had to be closed up with putty.

And I stated pinning things. First the ECM pod on the tail,

And then the tripod mast for the radar dish.

Work is progressing!

More pinning done. This time the canards, since a simple butt join wouldn't be strong enough to withstand a mishap.

They won't be glued on until just for paint starts.

Also neatened up the join of the ECM pod to the tail.

Now I need to work on the nav lights.

Well, the declining parts count tells me I'm getting close to paint.

Except for the pilots and canopy, everything is pretty much done. I finished reworking the chin-sensor-blade-thingy. I cut it in half and rounded the new edges.

The red spru is part of the new NAV lights, with one going under the nose and the second atop the RCM pod.

The larger one went back to its original place under the chin, while the smaller went up on the back, behind the RIO's position. The cockpit pieces are glued in as well and just awaiting some butts to warm the seat.

And this little doohicky-thing, I thought I'd add for something a little extra. We'll say whatever it is is in an extended position.

Tis is for now. Need to paint the pilots and cut the canopies-

And do the wing-tip marker lights! Dang.

Not done with the fuselage yet!!

I wanted to add something onto the flat area of the tail.

Thankfully, Gundam has once again come to the rescue.

After sanding and shaping, this is what I'm looking for. I fingure it's some kind of chase sensors.
