Just a build for the hell of it. One of the groups on FB had a Monogram thing going so decided to get in on the act...like one does.
So then, two pages of this on my site for the multitude of gory details. Linky thing below. http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/wipshuttle.html The shorthand, or as short as possible version of the story so far... This was originally slated to go with the full stack build which kinda faded away but i'll get back to it at a much later date. Onward anyways! The kit. The stuff in the payload bay is bound for the spares bins, paylaod bay itself will be used for strength. Resin main and OMS engines. Shapeways figures. ![]() Decals!...and lots of 'em! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() First up, some gluing together... ![]() Then knock some holes in it for the nose RCS thruster clusters. ![]() Some push moulded cones. ![]() ![]() Shoved in and glued up a treat. ![]() Repeat more than a few times and trimmed up. ![]() Sand and primer look see. ![]() Cockpit do up with some sheet styrene. ![]() ![]() Paint plastered and som DIY waterslide decal do up. ![]() ![]() ![]() Detailing done, seats and crew figures in position. ![]() Cockpit lighting going in. ![]() Cockpit in and a look see. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stand pole attached. ![]() Union flag decal where it should be. ![]() Window framing! Clear parts glued on. Multiple layers of masking tape laid down in one strip, sliced up in to the almost correct shapes and applied to the cockpit windows. ![]() Quick cure epoxy putty jammed in to the gaps, sanded and then a edge trim in places with wet tooled Aves to sharpen it up a bit. All tape removed. ![]() ![]() That's the build so far, all the Warbird tile decal sheets got scanned redrawn by me to make 'em a bit different. All printed out on to white backed decal paper via my laser printer. Mine to the left, theirs to the right. ![]() ![]() Theirs to the top, mine to the bottom. ![]() ![]() And that's it for now. Go easy out there now gang! ![]()

Thanks SF!
Well if you insist. Got somthing done this day... In primer. ![]() Leading edges done. ![]() Test look see with some paper print of the decals. ![]() Masking and built up coats of Tamiya primer white for some panelling because why not. ![]() All the paintwork that's needed is done. The decals suggest painting the whole tail black before applying decals so done and we'll see how it all turns out. ![]() The windows just got a bit of black edging, decals will do the rest. ![]() And the back got done. Decals will cover the beaver tail so no paint needed. ![]() More to come! ![]()

I like the RCC results. All those decal sheets, and they didn’t have those?
Great results on the RCS thrusters and star tracker ports. Definitely tuning into this for the long haul on this project. ![]() -SF |

Thanks SF. No they did not have the RCC, the decal set is a tad deficient in a few places but nothing that can't be dealt with by fair means or foul...foul if that's what it takes
![]() Well made a bit of a start, got the tail main decals on but not without a hiccup or two. Turns out the main ones are too tall and the deep grooves on the rudder rotation are just too much for the decals to handle no matter how much Microsol get's thrown at 'em. So a bit of a rework and reprint got what i needed. ![]() So got busy after ripping the first lot off and the result... ![]() ![]() Additional stuff to do but it's a start! ![]() More later.

The decaling continues...
The tail end with the Warbird redrawn and Warbird supplemental decals. Those are supposed to be used on the Revell one but what the hell. Partly decaled up back end. Used some extras I printed to do the back plate of the OMS pods and the side RCS bits. ![]() That bit in progress, on to the rest outside of the tail. Now seeing how the decals fit or not fit as it happens, decided to bin any attempt at accuracy so going for what looks nice. 40 or so decals later... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That sorted as much as needs be, on to the wings. ![]() ![]() Now did a vote on the FB RI page as to what to name her and the winner was 'Daedalus' Of 'Space Cowboys' fame. Do a close enough is good enough on how the wing markings look. ![]() ![]() ![]() And plastered the belly decals on...that was fun. ![]() That's the lot for now! ![]()

There was a vote?
Dang, I missed it. I would’ve voted for “Collaroy”... (Who remembers that shuttle...?) |

Someone did vote for the Collaroy SF, I just looked over the post. Can't find the message of the person that did but I put it on the list. Daedalus was the clear winner though.

As one does... ![]() ![]() Almost there my friends! ![]()

Also, gorgeous engines — what was the paint regimen? |

Thanks SF!
Paint on the engines as follows: Self etching grey primer. Dark dirt water based wash airbrushed inside and out, excess on the outside removed with a slightly damp cloth and moistened q-tip. Insides done with a moistened q-tip working in a continuous shallow spiral from the top of the inner cone to just short of the outer rim. Left some of the splatter from the wash inside the back end of the main engine bells as is because why not. Inside streaking done with with ground pastel chalk, black and dark grey, brush applied. Airbrushed a light coat of Alclad II light burnt metal over the outer surfaces with a slightly heavier coat at the open end. Silver drybrush over all the raised lines. Piping picked out in white gold but not over the raised bands on the piping. Airbrushed a light coat of Alclad light sheen varnish then a light coat of matt varnish. Fun and done ![]() Oh and finished thread here: http://www.resinilluminati.com/showthread.php?t=17365

Fantastic results. Every space shuttle main engine I have ever painted has used the following vigorous regimen:
-black paint ... and that’s it. Always appreciate tips from the masters on how it’s done. -SF |
